We now all have to be publishers to be marketers

I listened to this episode of Marketing Smarts MarketingProfs on Content Marketing, and it had some great takeaways. The interview was with Joe Pulizzi from the Content Marketing Institute and who wrote the book Epic Content Marketing. The podcast is well worth a listen, but here is the shorthand:

  • Why are we even doing this: Pick your content objective: sales, sunshine or savings
  • Be consistent on one platform, and don't stop - don't spread your peanut butter too thin
  • It is likely to take upwards of 18 months before you build a loyal base of followers unless you acquire it
  • Who are your 1000 superfans? - Share with them the insider information
  • Content marketing builds an asset; no other marketing discipline can do that.
  • You need to have a publishing mindset

Like I say to my clients, do it well and consistently if you want to put your stamp on an area of expertise.
